Masyaf is the city state is autonomous in Syria was once used as a base of operations for the assassination of the medieval power. It was taken over by the Templars in the early 16th century.

Masyaf (Arabic: مصياف‎ Maṣyāf) is a district (mantiqah) of the Hama Governorate in Syria. At the 2004 Census it had a population of 169,341.^[1] The centre of the district is the city of Masyaf.

The district of Masyaf is divided into five sub-districts or Nāḥiyas (population according to 2004 official census):

• Masyaf Nahiyah: (ناحية مصياف) population 68,184.^[2]
• Jubb Ramlah Nahiyah: (ناحية جب رملة) population 39,814.^[3]
• Awj Nahiyah: (ناحية عوج) population 33,344.^[4]
• Ayn Halaqim Nahiyah: (ناحية عين حلاقيم) population 16,502.^[5]
• Wadi al-Uyun Nahiyah: (ناحية وادي العيون) population 12,951.^[6]
